Boston College laid on a range of engaging activities to inspire more than 200 Year 6 pupils from five schools in the Boston area.
The two back-to-back ‘aspiration days’ were delivered as part of the Start Small; Dream Big pilot programme run by the Department for Education, which is facilitated by the Greater Lincolnshire Careers Hub.
A total of 234 Year 6 pupils took part in virtual reality experiences, fitness and wellbeing sessions, catering, maths, STEM workshops and cultural activities.
The aim of the event was to inspire young students to explore new horizons, dream big about their futures, learn more about the apprenticeships and T-levels offered by Boston College, and gain hands-on experience in various fields.
It also provided them with insights into possible future careers and a better understanding of what goes on at Boston College, where courses include Catering & Hospitality, Digital Technologies, Sport, Fitness & Wellbeing, English & Maths, and Engineering.
The event supported the goals of the Start Small; Dream Big programme by promoting engagement and curiosity, essential elements for future educational and career success. Through the different activities students could see practical applications of their learning and how it connects to careers in the real world.
In the long term, students who participate in such events are more likely to develop a positive attitude towards education and see the value of pursuing further studies. The skills and interests they discovered during these activities will guide them in making informed decisions about their future education and career.
“It has been an absolute pleasure to participate in the Start Small, Dream Big project,” said Jill Pickwell, Careers Leader at Boston College.
“The sessions provided our Boston College learners with valuable and rewarding work experience, while also inspiring and motivating year 6 students.
“The atmosphere was vibrant and lively, and it was fantastic to see pupils so engaged and enthusiastic. Their energy brought a sense of excitement and joy to the activities!
“This event also allowed also us to strengthen our connections with the local community, highlighted the exceptional qualities of our Student Ambassadors as role models, and created an environment in which to challenge stereotypes and raise aspirations for young people.
“We’re thrilled with the success of the taster days and the positive feedback we received, and we look forward to offering this event to primary schools again next year.”
Alex Nightingale, Careers Hub Operational Lead, added: “Witnessing the enthusiasm and engagement from the Year 6 students today was truly inspiring.
“As the Start Small; Dream Big project lead for the Careers Hub, I saw at first hand how the diverse activities sparked curiosity and excitement in the children’s young minds. The efforts to blend learning with fun clearly had a significant impact and helped to raise aspirations.
“It’s so heartening to see the positive interactions between the college and the local primary schools. A huge thank you to Jill, the staff team and all the students who made the days so positive.”
The primary schools which took part were Carlton Road School, Staniland Primary School, Old Leake Primary School, Butterwick Primary School and Boston Pioneers Academy.
