Statement: British Steel
NewsThe following statement has been issued today (22nd May 2019) by LEP Director Ruth Carver.
The news this morning that British Steel has entered insolvency is extremely worrying for the company, its employees and the people and businesses of Scunthorpe and Lincolnshire.
3,500 people work at the Scunthorpe plant, with a further 20,000 jobs within the supply chain across the Midlands and the Northern Powerhouse.
It is still early days, which means there is a lot of uncertainty, but we hope that the company, the Government, North Lincolnshire Council and the area’s LEPs will come together to discuss the future of steel making in the town and support the workers along with those in the supply chain and wider community.
The Great Lincolnshire LEP is committed to growing the economy of Scunthorpe and North Lincolnshire and has already committed over £11 million of funding to support schemes such as the Lincolnshire Lakes housing development and Northern Roundabout Junction, Normanby Enterprise Park Site 7, Scunthorpe town centre regeneration and Scunthorpe University Campus.
