The latest funding for Scunthorpe brings total investment by the LEP in North Lincolnshire to almost £9m.

The latest funding secured for Scunthorpe by the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership brings total investment by the LEP in North Lincolnshire to almost £9 million.

Last week it was announced that the Greater Lincolnshire LEP had agreed to provide almost £4m from the Government's Growth Deal to help pay for the scheme to regenerate Scunthorpe town centre.

The LEP’s Investment Board approved £3,850,000 towards phases 1 and 2 of the project, and with this latest announcement phase 1 will soon be complete,  establishing a business core and creating a civic, learning and business quarter within Church Square.

The Greater Lincolnshire LEP will be investing a total of £8.75m within the North Lincolnshire area, with  Growth Deal funding contributing towards the Lincolnshire Lakes housing scheme, Normanby Enterprise Park Site 7 and the Scunthorpe Northern Roundabout Junction.

This latest round of funding will enable road infrastructure improvements to be delivered in Scunthorpe town centre. The scheme will include construction of a new roundabout at Brigg Road/Station Road/High Street East to improve traffic flow at this busy junction.

Work is expected start on the new St John’s Market this autumn with the refurbishment of the former BHS store. This strategic acquisition will also release land within the town centre for future development.

Other work will include:

  • new shared use pedestrian and cycling facilities along Brigg Road/Trafford Street and a new pedestrian crossing to facilitate the new roundabout
  • a new priority junction at Winterton Road/Home Street
  • the addition of pedestrian and cycling facilities to Brigg Road/Winterton Road/Glebe Road roundabout
  • the delivery of the Church Square House extension to facilitate an additional 600 council staff in the town centre
  • enhancement of the public realm along the high street to Foundry Square

“Overall our investment in important infrastructure projects in Scunthorpe and North Lincolnshire amounts to almost £9 million. This is money well spent, as it will help to secure jobs and economic prosperity for years to come.

“The regeneration of town centres and the need to invest in a business quarter for Scunthorpe is a cornerstone of our Strategic Economic Plan, so we are very pleased to be able to support North Lincolnshire Council with its ambitions plans.”
