When working as a self-employed sub-contractor, Kye Challender from Grimsby decided to complete a Skills Bootcamp in Site Supervision to increase his knowledge and reach his goal of full-time employment.

“I was finding it difficult to achieve a steady work-life balance when working as a self-employed sub-contractor,” said Kye.

“I have a wife and two young children and found myself working over 60 hours a week to be able to afford time off. This is why I decided to look at increasing my knowledge through training.

“I heard about Skills Bootcamps from some colleagues and the Site Supervision one looked appealing as I knew one of my clients, Safeside Fire Stop (SFS), were looking to increase their supervisor numbers.”

The Skills Bootcamp in Site Supervision, delivered by Competum Ltd, consists of an NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Work Supervision, including the CITB-accredited Site Safety Supervisor SSSTS qualification, together with accredited certificates in associated health and safety courses that include manual handling, asbestos awareness, full first aid and mental health first aid.

“All of these skills were exactly what I needed for a potential career change with more responsibility and a permanent position,” said Kye.

“The courses were all carried out at weekends, so it didn’t impact my job and most of my NVQ training was carried out while I was continuing with my work.

“I passed all of the exams, and I am now proud to hold a number of higher-level qualifications thanks to Competum Ltd and the Skills Bootcamps scheme.”

Since completing the Skills Bootcamp Kye has now accepted a full-time supervisory role at Grimsby-based SFS.

Terry Horrocks, Director at SFS, said: “The qualifications and training that Kye had received during his Skills Bootcamp in Site Supervision helped me with my decision when offering him the full-time role.

“We have seen a big difference in his confidence and believe this was the added guidance, support and training received from Competum.”

Kye commented: “The Skills Bootcamp is the best thing that has happened to me. I now have a full-time position with a company that I fully respect and enjoy working with. I look forward to establishing myself within the business and spending more time with my family.”
