James Jones, from Reepham near Lincoln, became unemployed at the end of 2023 and started claiming Universal Credit.

He was actively looking for a new job but soon realised that employers were interested in hiring workers who had a Green CSCS Labourer Card; this is an entry-level card that demonstrates that the holder is able to work in manual jobs on construction sites.

“I wanted to get a Green CSCS Labourer Card so I enquired with my work coach at the job centre,” James explained. “He told me about the Skills Bootcamp in Construction run by Abbey Access Training and so I applied for the six-week course in March 2024.

“If I’m being honest, I was dreading the six weeks, but it was great: I learned new skills and the whole group was encouraged and supported, which made the six weeks enjoyable. I improved the knowledge and skills that I already had and I really enjoyed the two weeks of practical learning.”

James says he would 100% recommend the Skills Bootcamp in Construction to other people looking for work in the construction sector. “The bootcamp allowed me to improve my skills and knowledge,” he said. “The course was put over brilliantly and help was there when needed. The tutors were helpful and seemed determined to get me back into employment.”

James has since secured a job as a landscape operative on a full-time fixed term contract, and he’s hoping that he might be able to stay in the job after six months.

“I gained exactly what I wanted from taking the course,” he said. “I needed to update my CV and improve my confidence. The course allowed me to show my time management knowledge and skills and allowed me to improve as well.”

After completing the Skills Bootcamp in Construction, funded by the Greater Lincolnshire LEP in partnership with Lincolnshire County Council, all of the learners are being supported to find employment by Abbey Access Training.
