As Head of Apprenticeships and Careers at the Priory Federation of Academies Trust based in Lincoln, Ellis Potter wanted his team to benefit from some high-quality training from a reputable provider to enhance their vocational skills and improve the experience of their students.

He enrolled his team on the Skills Bootcamp in Vocational Training and Development led by the University of Lincoln in March 2024 and funded by the Greater Lincolnshire LEP in partnership with Lincolnshire County Council.

“We were really keen to enroll our team in the Skills Bootcamp,” said Ellis. “The chance to learn from qualified, experienced assessors and be taught in a way that allowed our team to take the learning and immediately apply it in the workplace was a significant draw for us.

“The team particularly enjoyed the hands-on approach of the Skills Bootcamp, and coming together as a team to develop their skills, share practice and learn from each other’s experiences. The practical workshops and delivery of the Skills Bootcamp allowed the team to apply their learning immediately, making the experience engaging, immersive and effective.”

Skills Bootcamps training must result in learners getting new jobs or taking on additional responsibilities, and this Skills Bootcamp provided the team from the Priory Federation of Academies Trust with a comprehensive understanding of vocational assessment techniques, including working towards a recognised assessor qualification.

They learned how to conduct effective assessments, which assessment tools were the most suitable, when and why certain assessments tools might be used, and how the role of an assessor can be an integral part of improving an apprentice’s or student’s workplace performance.

“The Skills Bootcamp has had a profound impact on our team,” said Ellis. “It not only equipped them with essential skills, but it provided them with confidence in and validation of their abilities. It has also provided invaluable networking opportunities with peers and professionals from inside and outside our organisation.

“Since completing the Skills Bootcamp some members of the team have become assessors within Priory apprenticeships, leading on the delivery of our apprenticeship programmes and the assessment of apprentices in the workplace.

“We would definitely recommend Skills Bootcamps to others. They offer a focused and intensive learning experience that has a direct impact on your day-to-day work. The skills and knowledge gained are invaluable for career advancement and personal development.”
