Year 10 and 11 food technology students learned about career opportunities and different roles in the food sector at a food science taster day organised by the Greater Lincolnshire Careers Hub.

Thirty-eight students from University Academy Long Sutton and University Academy Holbeach visited the National Centre for Food Manufacturing in Holbeach, part of the University of Lincoln.

They had the opportunity to speak directly with employers and FE and HE lecturers at the event, learn about different careers in the food sector and find out the different pathways via apprenticeships and vocational and higher education routes.

They were also able to link the job roles and activities into the food and science curriculum to better understand how what they are learning is used in industry.

Students formed small groups and took part in activities designed to get them working together to improve their confidence and their employability skills.

They also had meaningful encounters with employers and employees in the food sector and discussed careers and job roles such as quality management, new product development, environment technician, food technologist and food taster.

Both schools reported that their students were very enthusiastic about the event and enjoyed trying out in a real-world setting what they learn in the classroom.
